THE SILENT MICROPHONE III

The Silent Microphone III is the SM2 with three improvements:

  1. HEAD STRAPS - Keep the original head straps on the mask so you don't have to use your hands to hold the SM3 while using it.

  2. FRONT MICROPHONE - A high-quality microphone (Shure Beta58a placed at the front) for higher-quality recordings.

  3. INHALE VALVE - One-direction air valve to have fresh air in one of the tubes.  One tube with inhale-only and one tube open seemed to work better than having the open tube as exhale only.

Here is the mic grill from the back view.

Shure Beta 58a microphone.  The ball grill is inside the plaster, allowing the mic to screw on and off.

Here is the one-way inhale valve at the end of one of the tubes.

The SM3 is very front heavy.  Use a large dry sponge as a brace between the bottom of the mic and the upper chest.

  3. Did you use something to cover the ball grill before adding the plaster, because isn't there a possibility that the plaster might get inside the ball grill and somehow affect the functioning of the microphone? And what's exact name for the one-way inhale valve device in the picture? Couldn't find anything on Google.

  4. Sorry it took so long to respond. I just now saw the comments by accident.

I temporarily covered the ball grill with saran wrap until the plaster reached the largest part of the grill (so as to be able to easily pull out the grill) then I removed the grill and wrap, repositioned the grill without the wrap, and continued covering the rest of the grill.

The one-way valve I used was from a vendor at amazon.com. You could search for "Laerdal One Way Valve for Pocket Mask - 820410"

If the plaster of paris cracks to the point of a large piece breaking off, you have to start all over again. You want one solid piece because of the handling and the moisture from the breath.

The silent microphone reduces more audio than a standard vocal booth. But the audio quality of a vocal booth is better. Actually, I've found that the best quality comes from the drivers seat of a parked car with the windows rolled up.

I am doing experiments where I am driving on the freeway in a noisy hatchback and singing into a hand-held mic. I record on a portable digital recorder and I listen to the instruments with an MP3 player and earbuds. And then I use Sound Forge Pro with noise reduction 2.0 (250ms fast computer, reduce noise by 100 dB) to get rid of the noise.

So far, the parked car vocal booth is giving the best quality.

  5. Thank you for the info. I find that singing in the car may be a bit loud? Could this be harmful in the long run? Any other tips?
